IIHS announces 2017 Mazda CX-9 rating

Safety is an incredibly important factor that drivers look at when purchasing a new car. One of the most trusted sites that people turn to when car shopping is the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, where they do rigorous testing on most new models, like the 2017 Mazda CX-9. The Mazda CX-9 passed all of the test posed by the IIHS, and receive a Top Safety Pick+ rating.
The 2016 Mazda CX-9 was not fully tested, but received a “good” rating in roof strength and in head restraints and seats. The 2016 model also tested with a “superior” rating for front crash prevention. In 2017, the Mazda CX-9 has retained the respective good and superior ratings in those tests, and also received “good” ratings in small front overlap, moderate front overlap, and side tests.
IIHS test rubric
In order to qualify to be a Top Safety Pick+, the 2017 Mazda CX-9 had to pass the five tests with a “good” rating, and have “advanced” or “superior” front crash prevention as well as “acceptable” or “good” headlight quality. The LED projector lights from the Grand Touring and Signature trim were rated “acceptable,” with good visibility when using low beams.
All of the features tested are graded using multiple point tests that are individually observed. The front crash prevention test rates the optional smart brake and smart city brake systems that are available on the 2017 Mazda CX-9. Using a six-point scale, the front crash prevention system is tested in low and high speed simulations to observe the autobrake and forward collision warning systems. The other tests grade the vehicle on how the occupants are protected in the event of a collision.
