Exterior |
Confidence looks good on you!
Among today's boxy sedans, Mazda6's poised and confident Eurosleek exterior instantly communicates quality and innovative design.
The Mazda6’s bold and athletic stance announces its true sports car personality and instantly conveys the “Zoom-Zoom” spirit, while its updated front styling stands out from its more ordinary midsize competitors. |
| Distinctive Design |
Distinction and refinement in the details
Sculpted body surfaces run from the grille over the hood to the belt line and, together with the aggressive form of the grille and headlights, boldly say, “this is not your ordinary midsize sedan”. |
|
| |
| Body |
World-class quality and manufacturing precision
Mazda engineers have raised the bar of craftsmanship for the demanding expectations of today's midsize vehicle customer. It's what lies behind Mazda6's superior quality, fit and finish.
Ultra-precise body assembly has resulted in tighter gaps between key body panels, such as between the headlamp unit and the front bumper edge and the rear fender and the rear bumper, enhancing Mazda6's exterior appearance with its precise finish. |
|
| |
| Aerodynamics |
Sculpted to move you
The latest computer techniques in the design studio allowed Mazda designers to build, review, and digitally modify the shapes that would become the Mazda6. To completely realize the designers' vision, traditional, life-size clay models were combined with this cutting-edge technology to give Mazda designers valuable hands-on interaction with the vehicle, as well as a scale model for visual assessment and aerodynamic tests in the wind tunnel. |
|

| |
Interior |
Fresh and spacious interior design
To open the door of the Mazda6 is to discover an expansive interior, far roomier than the sporty exterior suggests. And to sit behind the wheel is to immediately anticipate the experience of sheer driving pleasure. This undeniable sense of excitement is the result of precise European styling, and an optimized, flexible space, with a highly functional layout.
Karakuri folding rear seats and an abundance of standard convenience features ensure the comfort of all Mazda6 occupants. |
| Distinctive Design |
“Emotion in Motion": Superior functionality and sporty elegance
To bring the "Emotion in Motion" design philosophy to a contemporary interior design, the design team looked at instrument panel innovations on vehicles dating back as far as 100 years ago.
This research generated a huge amount of data that allowed Mazda designers to give the Mazda6 a supremely functional layout, offering the driver extremely easy-to-read, easy-to-operate controls and switches, allied with Mazda's traditional fun-to-drive taste.
Mazda6 designers took ergonomic design one step further, carrying out extensive research programs to discover customer preferences. This valuable information allowed them to further improve and optimize the usability of Mazda6 controls according to real drivers, creating an unprecedented human-machine harmony.
|
|
| Comfort |
Roominess with easy-to-use functionality
The interior concept of the Mazda6 combines roominess with easy-to-use functionality and high levels of quality feel. The Mazda6 contains lots of room, comfortable seats with good side support, easy-to-read instruments and an ergonomically optimized and very intuitive driver environment
A Karakuri seat system comes standard for the Mazda6. With this system – named after Japanese Karakuri folding dolls – a single touch on a handle in the luggage area causes the rear seat cushions to sink into the floor while the seatbacks fold forward to create an entirely flat load floor. There’s no running to the passenger door to pull the rear seat down, and no need to remove the headrests. Simply opening the trunk and pulling on the handle makes the rear seat disappear into a flat, wide load extension. What’s more, the rear seats are a 60-40 split, separate-folding type, allowing the accommodation of longer items like skis without sacrificing the entire rear seating section. |
|
| Instrument Panel |
Wide chrome mouldings encircle all meters of the driver instrument cluster, and the centre instrument panel has a dark titanium surface colour. This elegant décor is repeated on the surface of the middle tunnel, as moulding for the dashboard fascia, the armrests of the door trim and door handles. The shift lever and shift console of the automatic transmission are in the same metallic-look as the air conditioning control knobs.
A silver-look moulding frames the centre instrument panel and drops down as low as the middle tunnel, and contrasts nicely with the dark panel colour and the surface of the radio, which is in piano black. |

Performance |
All systems go
Besides a dedication to driving pleasure, the Mazda6 has a dazzling array of advanced engineering features. Starting with a potent 212-hp V6, or a spirited 156-hp four-cylinder – each featuring all-aluminum construction and variable-valve timing to maximize low-end torque and high-rpm power. A double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension provide confident, surefooted handling. At all four wheels are power-assisted disc brakes that promote linear, fade-resistant stops. And up front, speed-sensing, power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering offers precise control and excellent on-centre feel. All of which explain why every Mazda6 delivers all-around exhilaration behind the wheel. |
| Engine |
|
The Mazda6 sedan comes with a choice of two engines, which have been developed to achieve world-class performance in combination with lower emissions and smooth, quiet operation.
The first engine offering is the 2.3 Liter Double Over Head Cam (DOHC) 4-cylinder engine with Variable Valve Timing technology. It has a maximum power output of 156 hp with 154 lb/ft of torque. Among the key objectives for this engine was achieving more torque, horsepower and smoothness, while delivering improved fuel economy, lower emissions and minimal maintenance requirements. The engine hits all of these marks, thanks to the use of lightweight aluminum, innovative engineering, such as the use of Mazda's Sequential Valve Timing (SVT), balance shaft and a keen attention to detail.
The second engine offering is a higher performance 3.0L DOHC V6 engine with a maximum power output of 212 hp with 197 ft/lb of torque. It has been optimized for low-friction efficiency and high power and torque output. Both engines meet the Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle requirements (ULEV gasoline engine). The 24-valve engine also is equipped with sequential valve timing. |
| Transmission |
|
Manual or Sport Mode Automatic?
Mazda6 transmissions invite the driver to participate fully in the driving experience, whether using the standard manual transmissions or the automatics that feature clutch-free manual shifting.
Standard on Mazda6 is the slick-shifting manual five-speed transmission, designed to give the 2.3-litre I4 engine a crisp, short-throw shifting feel and low shifting effort in true sports car style. It features dual synchronization - a high power synchronization feature for responsively quick shifting, easier shift effort and precision engagement - for the first and second gears.
An optional 5-speed Sport mode automatic transmission paired with the 2.3L I4 engine offers the ability to shift manually through all the gears, providing the hands-free convenience of an automatic with the ability to shift manually when desired for a more active driving experience. The highly responsive, smooth-shifting nature of the transmission has been optimized to match the I4 2.3L engine's character.
A 6-speed Sport mode automatic transmission is available with the 3.0-litre V6 engine. The six gears contribute to improved fuel economy and acceleration performance. Greater flexibility of shift schedule mapping (due to more available ratios) allows better optimization for various normal driving situations, such as maintaining speed using cruise control or making torque available for freeway passing. Shifting is responsive with less downshift delay for better acceleration feel. With the 6-speed Sport mode automatic transmission, the car is smoother, quicker, more responsive, and quieter (due to lower average engine rpm in normal driving) and achieves better fuel economy.
|
| Suspension |
|
At the front, the Mazda6 features a high-mounted, double-wishbone with MacPherson strut suspension. The upper wishbone is built from pressed steel while the lower wishbone features two forged-steel arms. A long suspension travel ensures optimal tire-to-road contact and feedback from road surface for superior grip and controllability. Low-friction ball joints in the suspension arms, and reduced friction loss in the dampers, contribute to improved linear steering response, while built-in rebound spring dampers and a large-diameter stabilizer bar contribute to improved roll motion and roll stiffness.
The rear suspension is a patented E-Type multi-link rear suspension that, like the front suspension, keeps the wheel travel straight up and down to maintain the perfect contact patch throughout the suspension travel. The system also uses low-profile coil springs that sit very low and fit under the cargo floor, providing a flat load floor in the trunk with more cargo capacity. High-strength steel keeps the shock absorber from flexing, and also reinforced the lower- and upper-mounting points. The suspension easily absorbs and damps bumps and dips in the road for a more comfortable ride.
|
| Brakes |
|
Class-leading brake performance
The Mazda6 comes equipped with power-assisted 4-wheel disc brakes engineered to deliver best-in-class braking. The front brakes are vented, which means they dissipate heat quickly and offer superior stopping power.
Mazda6’s four-wheel independent suspension, Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBFD) and Traction Control System (TCS) help promote stable handling in emergency situations. EBFD works by measuring braking force versus traction and allocating brake force to wheels that have the best grip for stopping before the ABS system activates. This advanced system helps to reduce the braking distance by using the precise level of brake modulation for confident stopping and optimum occupant comfort. |
| Safety |
World-class safety standards
Strong, solid and smart, the Mazda6 uses world-class technology to protect you and your precious cargo. The Mazda6 has been engineered to meet or exceed crash safety standards in all major world markets.
The unique triple-H architecture of the car offers special front "Crash Management", and advanced protection in the event of an accident, absorbing energy away from you and your passengers, and keeping the chassis from collapsing. We've even designed a Crashable Pedal assembly to protect the driver from pedal injuries. In frontal crash tests for driver and front-seat passenger conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)*, the Mazda6 earned Five Stars in 2005 and 2006 – the highest rating possible†.
Our dual front air bags, driver seat position and passenger-side weight sensors are standard on all models. As are dual front side air bags and side air curtains, giving extra head protection to you and your passengers in the event of a side impact.
We don't just keep you safe! To protect your Mazda6 from theft, we've included an immobilizer system, with an anti-theft alarm system available on GT models.
*For complete test results, visit www.nhtsa.dot.gov
†Tests conducted in the U.S. on the 2005/2006 Mazda6 sedan and wagon. Highest rating possible for driver and front passenger frontal impact and rollover protection by the U.S. NHTSA. |
